Pono Pacific can assist you with your
conservation needs if you are a private landowner. Our experience
includes conservation
work in bogs, wetlands, rain forests, dry forests, mesic forests,
costal areas, off-shore islands, and much more. Our clients
include state & federal agencies, private non-profit
conservation agencies, landowners, community groups, and
more.
We are also experienced
in working with landowners who have received grants and can
understand their constraints. Listed below are some of
the services that
we provide. Please contact us should you have questions regarding
these services or if you desire a service that is not listed
below.

Landowners and
land managers often are challenged by many projects that cost
a lot of their time,
energy, and resources. In order to help alleviate this burden,
Pono Pacific can coordinate and execute conservation-related
projects. In addition, for specialty items, Pono Pacific works
with a variety of companies that are the best in their field.
This ensures that the project at hand will be completed with
the utmost quality. Additionally, Pono Pacific looks for the
best priced companies locally in Hawaii which ensures a good
cost to you and good quality.
Environmental
projects often require proper preliminary planning and research
before work can begin. Pono Pacific works with
specialists in several fields including geology, archeology,
botany, wildlife biology, and more. In order to help you
get your project accomplished, we can assist you in developing
and creating:
• Management plans
• Environmental Assessments
• Surveying
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS) projects Invasive
species are any introduced plant or animal species that take over and out-compete
native species for habitat and resources. In many cases, invasive
species take over a native habitat which leads native
species in the area to either leave or to perish. In addition,
invasive species can cause severe economic consequences for land owners
and users; invasive species can cause land value
to decrease and can also limit land use.
Pono Pacific can help suppress and eradicate (when
possible) invasive species. We use
a variety of methods including manual removal, removal with
power tools, and herbicide
application.
Removal of vegetation offsite via chippers and/or
hauling can also be provided.
Water
is one of our most important resources. Forest restoration
in
particular often requires proper amounts of water
in order to reestablish native plants. The problem,
however,
is
that water is not always readily available.
Pono Pacific can help to construct water catchment
units to collect rain water and install irrigation
lines to
provide proper water feeds to planting areas.
Feral ungulates
are a major cause of erosion and the destruction
of native
ecosystems.
Their actions pose a particular threat to plant
species, bodies of water (such as rivers
and streams), coastal
reefs, and native
birds (their actions encourage water pocket
formation, which serve as breeding grounds for
avian malaria
and avian pox-carrying
mosquitoes).
Pono Pacific will design and build predator fences
and exclosures to protect against feral ungulates.
Herbicide Application: Pono Pacific is licensed
as a commercial restricted pesticide applicator
by the
State
of Hawaii,
Department of Agriculture. A variety of herbicide
application methods
can be used that are both effective and safe
for your land.
Control
of avian predators (rats and mongoose) during
the breeding season
of native bird
populations
has been shown to increase the reproductive
success rates of these bird populations.
In assisting with these efforts, Pono Pacific
can set-up and monitor poison stations, snap
traps,
and live traps.
Pono Pacific
can also assist in bird and nest monitoring,
data collection, and data interpretation.
Trails provide the public
with a way to explore, enjoy, and learn about
Hawaii’s
native ecosystems. Trails also help to prevent
erosion (by discouraging trailblazing), provide
access to remote areas
for forest fire fighting and for rescues,
and if properly maintained and used, they keep people safe.
Pono Pacific provides trail maintenance services
including trail building, light or heavy
vegetation clearing, and
fallen tree removal. In addition, Pono Pacific
can widen eroded trails,
install erosion control mechanisms, and much
more.
Data collection is
very important for landowners as it helps you
to assess the
health of particular
ecosystems,
determine how restoration projects or land
usage are impacting the environment around
them, and
much more.
Furthermore,
data is important for reports, grants,
and assessments of your land.
In order to assist in data compellation,
Pono Pacific can assist in surveys, transects,
GPS
data collection,
species
monitoring,
and other like services. We are also knowledgeable
in GIS.
